Susquehanna Trailways to end daily bus trips to cities

Those without a car who need to get from Williamsport to Philadelphia or Harrisburg will need to find alternate transportation.

Susquehanna Trailways, 11 W. Church St., will end its regular route bus service as of Aug. 31, according to the corporate office’s statement.

Regular service between Elmira, New York, to Harrisburg; Lock Haven to New York City; Lock Haven to Philadelphia; and Sunbury to Philadelphia will end.

To accommodate college-bound students, however, a bus will operate from Lock Haven to Philadelphia on Fridays, according to the company.

The decision was due strictly to economics. Although it received a grant this year, the company did not have enough money to support the daily bus trips, according to the corporate statement.

Despite the regular service ending, chartered tours will continue, the company stated.

Attempts to reach management at the Avis location were not immediately successful.

The loss of regular daily bus trips to various cities will be challenging to those without transportation, said William E. Nichols Jr., city finance director and general manager of River Valley Transit, a separate bus service in the city and region.

Susquehanna remains a fixture in the city and was involved in a celebration of the grand opening of the Church Street Transportation Center when the 350-space garage owned by River Valley Transit opened. Before then, the third-generation, family-owned business was at the intersection of East Third and Mulberry streets. That lot remains undeveloped by the city.

Susquehanna Trailways also hopes to offer trips to Philadelphia during the holiday seasons. Those trips only will be available until another bus company can take over the routes.

The family-owned motor coach company has a fleet of more than 25 buses.
