Ashkar PTA bringing Harlem Wizards to play

East Lycoming school district’s staff will be taking on the Harlem Wizards Nov. 7 in a two-hour, laugh-filled basketball game at Hughesville High School.

Hosted by Ashkar Elementary’s Parent Teacher Association, the Wizards will be playing against the Hughesville Hoopsters, a team made up of East Lycoming School district staff. That team includes Superintendent Michael D. Pawlik and principals Jill Warg, Sherry Cowburn and Tommy Coburn.

The Harlem Wizards, a comedy basketball team, have raised over $2 million for fundraising efforts around the country with their high-flying tricks and emphasis on audience participation.

Before the event at the high school, the Wizards will be visiting Renn, Ashkar and Ferrell elementary schools and Hughesville Junior High School.

The Wizards will visit each school and host 20-minute assemblies for the students, where they will show off tricks and speak with them on topics chosen by the schools. Two of the elementary schools have chosen their assemblies to focus around teamwork.

“Just to encourage kids that even adults need teamwork,” Ashkar Elementary PTA member Janell Daugherty said. “I think basketball is a fun way to incorporate that. It’ll be a fun night.”

Admission will be charged. Tickets are available at each school office and at the door the day of the event. Children 3 and under get in free.
