No tax increase expected in Hughesville

HUGHESVILLE — For the eighth year in a row borough residents will see no increase in their taxes, Mayor Walter Reed announced at Monday night’s borough council meeting. The current rate of 5 mills will hold for another year as council approved for first reading the 2018 balanced budget of $969.278. The total reflects a slight increase over the 2017 budget of $961,708.

According to Reed, wages, pensions and employee medical insurance costs contributed to the uptick in expenditures.

Under new business, council approved for advertising a dead or diseased tree ordinance. Under the ordinance, homeowners would be notified that the borough has determined that they have trees that are fifty per cent dead and need to be removed. Residents are then given time to appeal. If there is an appeal an arborist, specified by the borough, would inspect the tree to see if it needs to be taken down. If it proves to be diseased or dead, the homeowner would pay the cost of the inspection in addition to removing the tree. If the tree does not need to be cut down then the borough would cover the cost of the inspection.

Council also approved by resolution the Muncy Creek Comprehensive Plan.

In other actions council:

• Approved an application for the annual Christmas Parade to be held Dec. 3.

• Set leaf pickup in the borough for Nov. 13 to Dec. 1. Residents should place leaves on the grassy area between the sidewalk and the curb, not in the street.

• Approved a request by the Point Bethel Methodist Church to close off a portion of Academy Street between Third and Fourth streets from 5 to 8 p.m. Halloween night.

The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Borough Building, 147 S. Fifth St.
