County: Recycling sites have been contaminated

The Lycoming County recycling drop-off centers need some help from patrons who drop off glass.

“Glass recycling has become contaminated with plastic bags, cardboard, Pyrex, ceramic, drinking glasses and other materials,” said Lauren Strassuer, Resource Management Services recycling coordinator.

The county needs help from those using the sites to clean up and recycle only glass jars and bottles, and to separate them by color, she said.

Glass from the sites is no longer processed at the county facility, she said.

Should the contamination continue, the county would foot the bill to recycle glass or discontinue glass collections, she said.

Notification signs will be posted at drop-off sites.
