New president for Montoursville Area School Board

Montoursville Area School Board named Scott Konkle its new president during the annual reorganization meeting Tuesday night.

Konkle replaces Ronald Snell, who remains on the board.

The vote to approve Konkle was 7-0.

Voting yes were Snell, Susan Beery, Daniel Albert, Jennifer Marriott, Dorothy Mathers, William Ruffing, and Robert Logue. Konkle abstained. Denise Johns was absent.

Konkle represents the district’s Region 3, the borough of Montoursville

William Ruffing was approved as vice president. He represents Region 3.

The board agreed to continue meeting the second Tuesday of the month for its regular meetings and the fourth Tuesdays for work sessions.

Work sessions will not be held in June, July, August, November and December.

Meetings will be held at the high school conference room.

The board approved the purchase of the McGraw Hill Wonders and Wonderworks programs to support students in kindergarten to grade five for English Language Arts at a cost of $175,000.

Superintendent Christina Bason said it will replace an existing program that came at little cost to the district but was not consistent with state educational measurements.

Marriott, a teacher in the Jersey Shore Area School District, said she felt the program, while costly, is necessary.

Snell called it a minimal investment for preparing students.

In personnel matters, the board approved the hiring of Daniel Heinrichs as a high school biology teacher. He replaces David Myers.

Scott Powell was approved as a substitute physics teacher.
