City mulls legal action
Mayor Gabriel J. Campana is exploring the ability of the city to sue pharmaceutical companies on the heels of Lycoming County commissioners’ intentions to look into the issue.
Campana said the city is the main host of the adverse effect of heroin addiction and misuse of prescribed pain-killers.
He stated in a news release that he informed the City Council’s finance committee about his intention and is prepared to meet with fire, police, codes, county Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr., advocacy group Project Bald Eagle and Williamsport Crime Commission on the matter.
“This surge has taken too many lives,” he said.
“I personally believe the pharmaceutical industry needs to take responsibility,” he said. “I have been in communication with a local law office with expertise in this area … Council has been informed and next week it and myself will be in serious discussion with this proficient law firm.”
