Coalition to hear speaker prior to film

A former inmate in a maximum security prison who speaks nationally about his experiences will be hosted at the county’s Reentry Coalition meeting next month. A screening of his movie “Pull of Gravity” will also be shown at the Community Arts Center that night.

El Sawyer is a filmmaker and social justice activist. At 17 years old, he was sentenced to serve eight to 20 years in prison for a shooting related to drugs. He was released after his minimum at the age of 25.

After being released in 2003, Sawyer began creating media programs for young people.

He eventually would serve as the director of a non-profit organization in North Philadelphia.

Sawyer has won numerous awards for his work in film and community activism. He speaks nationally on the challenges of reentry and about the environments from which prisoners come and, eventually, return back to.

He will speak to the coalition from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 5 at the Trade and Transit Center II.

The screening of “Pull of Gravity” will begin at 7 p.m. in the Community Arts Center. For more information about the screening, visit
