Jersey Shore appoints county as tax collector

JERSEY SHORE — Borough council Monday night voted unanimously to appoint Lycoming County to collect its taxes for the next three years.

The cost will be $1.50 per tax bill, an increase of 50 cents over the previous costs.

Borough Manager Joseph Hamm noted that no person has run for the borough’s tax collector position in recent years.

The vote to appoint the county to collect taxes was 7-0.

Voting yes were Marguerite Dyroff, Sean Simcox, Janet Barnhart, Mike Zellers, Paul Garrett, Barb Schmouder, and Matthew Haag.

Ken Scheesley was absent.

In other action, council approved a professional services agreement of $17,500 with Larsen Design Group for the borough’s transportation plan. It was noted that grant money should cover all but $1,500 of the costs.

Council drafted an ordinance to adopt the 2018 version of the International Property Maintenance Code.

Council passed a resolution to oppose proposed state legislation that pre-empts local zoning to allow wireless companies to erect cell towers in public right-of-ways. The Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors is urging communities to oppose the bill.

The possibility of putting in place a helipad to transport patients by air from Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital was briefly discussed.

Simcox, a member of the hospital board, said as yet there has only been talk of that occurring.

He said a study likely is needed before going ahead with such plans. He said he will raise the issue at the next hospital board meeting.

Garrett noted there will be open swimming at the Jersey Shore High School on Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m., Jan. 20 to March 24.
