City police officer suspended, but details scant

A city police officer has been suspended with pay for six months and remains the subject of an internal police department investigation, city officials said.

Cpl. Eric Houseknecht, who joined the department in 1998, was suspended for unspecified reasons, according to Mayor Gabriel J. Campana, director of public safety. In that capacity, the mayor oversees the police, fire and codes departments.

Police Chief David J. Young has declined to comment but said the matter is the subject of an internal investigation.

Megan Page, director of human resources, confirmed the suspension was a personnel matter and could offer no further comment.

Police Lt. Steven Helm, as president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 29, said it was his understanding there is an ongoing internal matter.

“In the event of an adverse job action, the union will ensure the officer’s due process and protection of those rights,” he said.
