Committee gives nod to bandshell grant application

City Council is expected tonight to consider the administration’s request to apply for a $100,000 grant — and raise another $100,000 to match it — to pay for repairs needed at the Brandon Park bandshell.

Council’s finance committee this week gave the request a positive recommendation for council to review.

Stephanie Young, director of the city Community Development department, said the Keystone Historic Preservation Construction grant is a match and would require $100,000.

The band shell has some “minor” structural deficiencies, according to Adam Winder, general manager of public works.

The plan is to repair them and bring in a handicapped-accessible lift to allow those with physical disabilities to access the stage, he said.

Some of the matching funds could be Community Development Block Grants, county provided, and a request will be made to the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania, Young said. The foundation requires a letter of intent and a minimum request of $50,000.

Councilwoman Liz Miele, committee chairwoman, asked if the sound system could be upgraded due to weather-related issues.

The sound system should be fully functioning and provide quality sound. Mayor Gabriel J. Campana said he would envision expansion of the stage.

Councilwoman Bonnie Katz said the steps leading to the stage need to be fortified due to their rickety condition.

In another expected action, the city Streets and Parks Department is going to ask for a resolution to authorize an agreement for work to be performed at Veterans Memorial Park at West Fourth Street and Wahoo Drive.

A wall is going to be constructed with major wars listed on them, according to Adam Winder, general manager of public works department.
