Charter commission elects newest member

A city man was elected by the Williamsport Charter Commission Wednesday to fill a vacancy.

Thomas Forquer, of Union Avenue, was chosen. Mike Gardner, of Louisa Street, also sought the position but was not selected.

Forquer fills the vacancy of Steve Shope who said his new employer will not permit him to remain on the commission. Shope’s resignation was approved at the meeting.

Janice Frank, city clerk and secretary for the commission, will prepare a packet of information bringing Forquer up to speed on what has transpired since the first meeting of the seven-member commission.

Forquer told the group he thought the commission and the idea of giving voters a choice in their local form of government to be a “worthwhile process at this point in time.”

The commission continues to review the best form of government for the third-class city charter. It is down to either strong mayor-City Council or council-manager.

The commission under law has a variety of limitations compared to another government study commission of seven people who are exploring home rule activities in other cities.

The charter commission, meanwhile, will hold a meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday and then will start to deliberate on a recommendation for the voters, said Fred Holland, commission chairman.

The vote will take place during general election in November.
