Housing authority hires firm to do water line project

The Lycoming County Housing Authority Board voted to hire Sikora Brothers Paving Inc., of Hunlock Creek, for the Penn Vale water main/lateral replacement project at a cost of $1.081 million during its regular monthly meeting Thursday.

The firm submitted the lowest bid for the project, which will begin in early May.

Housing Authority Executive Director MeriLyn Severson said the system was built in 1939 and is in dire need of upgrading.

The project, set for completion in August, is expected to bring about a savings of $49,000 per quarter once the lines are replaced.

In another matter, an amendment to the no-smoking policy at housing units was approved to include electronic cigarettes. It was noted that residents have complained about the use of e-cigarettes in common areas such as community rooms and hallways.

Severson reported that net charge-offs for the year amount to $3,285. Charge-offs are uncollected rents and other unpaid expenses reported by the authority.
