East Lycoming one step closer to tax hike vote

HUGHESVILLE — East Lycoming School Board unanimously approved the district’s proposed general fund budget for the 2018-19 school year Tuesday night.

The $25 million budget, which is a 0.62 percent increase from last year’s budget, has $311,000 in expenditure increases for salary, health insurance and state school retirement for the district. The district’s budget also shows a $209,000 decrease in expenditures due to a decrease in debt services.

“It funds all of the current programs within the school district and carries forward our initiatives we’ve been working on,” said David Maciejewski, the district’s business manager.

The budget includes a 0.44 mill increase in real-estate tax over last year’s 13.5 mills, meaning that local property owners can expect a $44 increase in taxes for each $100,000 of a property assessed value.

In other news, the board approved:

• The retirement of Cindy Benedict, building secretary at Renn Elementary.

• The appointment of Kristopher Gildein, secondary biology teacher, for $50,584 for the 2018-19 school year.

• Board member Donna Gavitt as board treasurer for the 2018-19 school year.

• The Lycoming Career and Technology Center general fund budget for $2,166,361 — a career training program for students.

• An amendment to the district’s Energy Performance Contract with McClure Co. for two chiller systems for $188,750.

• A 5-cent increase in the cost of the elementary and secondary school breakfasts and lunches.

• The awarding of $171,800 to HRI, Inc. in Muncy and $46,650 to Mid-State Paving, LLC in Middleburg for paving upgrades and concrete repairs.

Board members in attendance were Richard Michael, Richard Bradley, Donna Gavitt, Erica Hubler, Lisa McClintock, Karen Berger, Robert Heckrote and Kristy Creasy. Absent was Michael Mamrak.
