Montgomery School Board approves preliminary budget with tax increase
The Montgomery Area School Board voted Tuesday night for a 0.35 mill tax increase, which will bring the district’s tax rate to 15.21 mills if the budget passes its final vote.
The board also appointed Dana Pick as the board’s treasurer for the 2018-19 school year, voted to advertise for the position of Montgomery Athletic and Community Complex coordinator and approved bids of about $34,400 for Advantage Sports and Fitness Inc. to install rubber turf flooring for the weight room and turf for the batting cages and about $23,300 for Miller Flooring Co. to refinish the floor of the Montgomery Athletic and Community Center. Superintendent Daphne Bowers said at April’s meeting that work on the complex is expected to be complete by mid-August.
All measures passed 8-0, with board member Christopher Johnson absent.
In personnel matters, the board accepted the retirements of secondary biology teacher Lee Robinson, second-grade teacher Debbie Kennedy, secondary business education teacher Betty Marr and fourth-grade teacher Marianne Mulfinger. Shana Haden was approved as a high school virtuoso adviser for a stipend of $1,050 while Megan Schoonmaker will serve as a guest teacher and Brenda Grab as a summer custodial worker.
The board approved Keith Davis as varsity coach for a stipend of $4,550, Chris Yoder as assistant coach for a stipend of $2,850, and Justin Page and Brian Taggert as junior high coaches for stipends of $2,050 for basketball; Paul Bozella as varsity coach for $4,550, Dale Shaffer as assistant coach for $3,075, Matt Buck and Nate Hakes as assistant coaches for $2,850 each, Ty Drick as assistant coach for $2,300 and Tony Wright, Tim Thomas and Robert Kibbe as assistant volunteer coaches for varsity football; Brian Pick as a volunteer junior high football coach, Zach Sauers and Tim Berry as assistant coaches for stipends of $602.50, Brad Tupper and Rob Gearhart as assistant coaches for stipends of $540, and Chris Angelini as a volunteer assistant coach for the junior high football team; Jenn Mowrey as head coach for varsity cheer leading for a stipend of $2,800; John Cloud as head varsity golfing coach for a stipend of $3,050 with Jeff Deisher as a volunteer assistant coach; Chip Deem as varsity tennis coach for a stipend of $4,425 and Tanya Deem as assistant coach for a stipend of $2,825 with Dakkota Deem and Julie Deem as volunteer assistant coaches; Melissa Balliet as varsity soccer coach for $4,275 and Thomas Flick as assistant coach for $2,675; and Chris Gleen as girls junior high softball coach for a stipend of $2,050 with Steve Huleing, Harry Overdorf, Harry Overdorf Jr., and Rebecca Glenn as assistant volunteer coaches.
In other business, school board members:
• Voted to approve four agreements with Intermediate Unit 17, covering technology services, special education services and compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and a three-year addendum with Mowery Transportation Inc.
• Approved requests by Montgomery American Legion Post 251 to use the auditorium May 28, the Montgomery Area Independent Football League to use the football fields from July 1 to Nov. 18 and Central Susquehanna Opportunities Inc. to use a high school classroom from June 18 to 28.
