Hughesville officials say they’re ready for the fair

HUGHESVILLE — Temporary “no parking” signs are up on Fifth Street along with signs advertising $2 sodas — meaning it’s fair time in Hughesville.

At the borough council meeting, Walter Reed said the board is ready and looking forward to the Lycoming County Fair, which begins Wednesday and continues until July 21.

In other business, Police Chief Rod Smith confirmed that the new car the borough purchased for $41,650 will be back in Hughesville on Aug. 20. However, it will be sent out to be detailed with decals to be added.

“It’s expected to be on the road in mid-September,” Smith said.

Back on May 14, the council voted to approve a 2018 Ford Explorer. It was stated the vehicle cost $29,950 with $11,700 for additional equipment such as a cage, a console, lights, sirens, gun holder, exterior decals, camera and a computer mount.

“This is good for us (the police department) because they function as a second office,” Smith said upon voting.

In another matter, solicitor Ryan Tira said he was still working on a food truck related ordinance and would have something at the next meeting.

Discussions about food trucks being allowed into the borough started at council’s June 11 meeting and have resurfaced since.

After researching the issue, Councilman Todd McCowan previously stated the ordinance should limit food trucks to areas zoned for industrial use, along with zones that are both commercial and residential, with trucks forbidden from selling food in areas exclusively zoned as residential.

Council members mentioned that it was a priority to keep the food trucks far away from the brick-and-mortar restaurants.

Also in attendance at the meeting were Mayor Richard Smith, Councilman Dan Cale, Councilman Jerry Daugherty, Councilman Todd McCowan, Councilman Andrew Mook and Councilwoman Brenda Smith.
