Mold found in another area school district

The discovery of mold at Loyalsock Valley Elementary School has forced the cancellation of classes there for the rest of this week.

Montoursville Area School District Superintendent Christina Bason said results of an air quality test earlier this week turned up fungal growth in a ceiling area.

Classes subsequently were canceled for Wednesday.

“With the roof leaks, we felt we had to have it (testing) done,” Bason said.

Air quality testing was done Aug. 23, but school officials did not know of the results until Tuesday.

Bason explained that the fungal growth was present on tiles of ceiling hidden by a drop ceiling in eight rooms of the building.

Parents of children who attend the school were informed of the issue.

All other school buildings in the district will remain open.

They will be tested as well for air quality, Bason said.

In the meantime, the ceiling where the mold was discovered is being replaced and the area cleaned.
