Florence remnants to bring rainfall

Like an uninvited guest, Florence, now a tropical depression, is going to visit the region today and Tuesday, but fortunately it’s not expected to be here very long or cause any serious flooding.

That is, of course, if the storm moves out of here as forecast and does not stall, according to David Martin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service at State College.

During the next two days, Florence is expected to drop 1 1/2 inches of rain, which should not have any significant impact on the Susquehanna River, Martin said.

“Midweek last week we saw a rapid rise in the river (it crested just over 21 feet last Tuesday). That’s not expected to happen this time based on our expected rainfall,” he said.

“There could be some flooding in low-lying areas or ponding of water on some roads,” he said.

“If it (Florence) stalls or we get a lot of really intense rainfall in a very short period of time, flash flooding is very possible,” Martin added. “That’s not expected to happen. It would be an usual event.”

High temperatures both today and Tuesday are expected to be in the upper 70s with overnight lows in the upper 60s. If all goes as planned, Florence will be leaving town by late Tuesday afternoon, Martin said.

“Wednesday and Thursday looks pretty nice,” with sunny skies returning to the region, he said. High temperatures will return to the upper 70s to low 80s, and overnight lows will be in the mid-60s.

A cold front from the southern plains will be moving into the area by late Friday, bringing with it a mixture of sun and clouds for the weekend.
