Paving extensions given positive recommendation

Council’s public works committee gave a positive recommendation Tuesday on a resolution authorizing an extension until spring for paving of Arch Street between West Fourth Street and Glynn Avenue on behalf of the Williamsport Municipal Water Authority.

A “scratch” or light coat on top has been applied before the winter months, said Rebecca Haladay, authority engineer-manager.

“It’s not too bad and it is driveable,” said Joseph Gerardi, city codes administrator.

The extension will be for a spring milling and repaving, Haladay said.

The committee also gave a positive recommendation to authorize the excavation of Cemetery Street for a gas main replacement project done by UGI. The work will require some temporary inconvenience, but when completed the residents and users of the street will experience a better smoother surface.

Adam Winder, general manager of city streets and parks department, has requested designation of an agent for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Mark Benner, city engineer in training, outlined the best management practices in place for the city next year. These are helpful in the city to obtain a nutrient pollution permit by reducing sediment load getting into the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. The permit is given by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
