Sun-Gazette names new city editor

Michael Maneval, a long-time Sun-Gazette editorial staff member, has been named city editor of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, publisher Bernard A. Oravec announced.

Maneval has a long history with the Sun-Gazette, having served as a night desk editor and business editor here for more than a decade, Oravec said.

“Mike’s experience with the newsroom staff and understanding of our community will go a long way toward maintaining a solid foundation of local news coverage,” Oravec said. “I am confident that he’ll be a steady presence and leader in the newsroom.”

In this position, Maneval will be responsible for planning coverage of local news events, deploying staff and developing the daily news digest, which essentially is a plan that the night editors follow to put out each day’s edition. He also will be responsible for developing content for the front page of the Sunday edition as well as the Sunday Region section.

Before joining the Sun-Gazette staff in 2006, Maneval was an editor and reporter at The Ridgway Record newspaper in Elk County and also wrote for the St. Mary’s Daily Press and Kane Republican. He has more than 15 years of experience in local community journalism.

“Mike has a strong foundation in journalism and will be an ideal partner in leading the newsroom into the future,” said L. Lee Janssen, Sun-Gazette editor. “He understands the news business and is capable of leading a team of young reporters and veteran staffers as they cover the daily news and develop content for publication seven days a week. Moreover, he is committed to covering the local stories that impact our readers where they live and work and that are not being told by other news outlets. He’s not afraid to go after information that our readers want. I look forward to working with him in this capacity.”

Among his goals, Maneval hopes to continue and improve upon the Sun-Gazette’s tradition of thorough, detailed and well-rounded reporting.

“The Williamsport Sun-Gazette has proven itself as an essential part of living in Lycoming County,” Maneval said. “Nobody else is covering the important municipal meetings, crime and criminal proceedings, businesses and careers, schools, sports, entertainment and lifestyles of the people of Lycoming County and surrounding counties and I look forward to building upon that.”

He and his wife Alyssa and 1-year-old son Stephen live near Brandon Park.
