Christmas on Main Street in Wellsboro starts Friday

WELLSBORO — The history of Wellsboro’s production of “Shiny Brites” will be celebrated this weekend on Main Street here.

Shiny Brites were Christmas ornaments made from the late 1930s to 1950s when the town was known as “The Glass Ornament Capital of the World.”

Beginning at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday, 25 local business locations will feature the historic ornaments and photographs of Corning Glass Works Wellsboro plant employees who began making them prior to the start of World War II.

Visitors who purchase a guidebook to all of the locations of the ornaments may get the book stamped to enter into a drawing for a gift basket.

The event also will feature free rides on Tony’s Trolley from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday starting at the Arcadia Theatre. Children may visit Santa from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Deane Center.

Also on Saturday, there will be a live outdoor nativity and reindeer, photos with Krampus, a showing of the film “Elf,” and musical offerings.
