Area expects afternoon wintry mix; possible meeting postponement

While the morning commute today was not expected to be a problem, motorists heading out by this afternoon may face a greater challenge.

An estimated snowfall of 1 to 3 inches mixed with sleet and freezing rain will cause slick road conditions, according to the National Weather Service in State College.

“The snow will start by mid-morning (9 a.m.) and will come down hard by the middle of the afternoon,” David Martin, a meteorologist with the weather service said Tuesday night.

A winter weather advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. today until Thursday morning.

“The region will start to receive a mixture of freezing rain and sleet sometime after 3 p.m. The sleet will change to patches of drizzle,” Martin said.

“We’ll probably see close to 3 inches of snow when it’s all over,” Martin said, adding that the snow will get heavier in the south towards Harrisburg and lighter in the north.

This latest storm is moving across the area from the Central Plains, he said.

As of midnight Monday, the Williamsport area had received 24.7 inches of snow for the winter season, just a half an inch less than the average amount of snowfall the region receives by this time each year, Martin said.

After today, no more snow is in the forecast at least for the next 10 days, he said.

“We’re seeing a lot of ups and downs (in terms of temperatures),” Martin said, adding that after experiencing temperatures ranging from the mid-teens to low 30s on Tuesday and staying in the high 20s today, Thursday’s high was expected to be in the high 40s with mostly sunny skies.

“Except for an occasional rain shower, I think we’re in pretty good shape for the weekend,” Martin said.

As a result of the possible inclement weather, the Jersey Shore Area School District has announced that a determination to hold the hearing scheduled for tonight on the issue of whether to close the Avis and/or Salladasburg Elementary schools and related facilities will be made this morning.

The hearing is the first of two that had been announced to allow public comment on the issue. It is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. at the Jersey Shore Middle School, 601 Thompson St.

According to Dr. Jill Wenrich, district superintendent, if bad weather warrants a change, notification will be posted on the district website and Facebook page.
