Area man arrested for assault of 11-year-old

A Montgomery area man was arrested on charges related to the alleged rape of an 11-year-old.

Michael Eugene Sweet, 46, allegedly raped an 11-year-old in the area several times over the course of an unknown period, however most recently on Jan. 31, according to an affidavit filed by Montgomery Borough Police.

Sweet is charged with both the act and criminal attempt of raping a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, as well as unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors, indecent assault of a person less than 13 years of age and indecent exposure.

District Judge Jon E. Kemp labeled Sweet a flight risk and a danger to the community. Currently, Sweet is being held in Lycoming County Prison and was denied bail.

In an interview with police, the victim said Sweet entered the room while the usual occupants had left. He closed the laptop the victim was using and forced the 11-year-old down on the bed.

“The victim stated that Michael removed his own pants” exposing himself, police said.

Sweet then began to allegedly touch the 11-year-old’s genitals with his hands as he pinned the victim to the bed.

The assault was stopped when another minor walked into the room, according to the affidavit.

The victim told police that the event happened at least 5 times prior, but the exact dates were unknown.

Sweet is scheduled to be in court for his preliminary trial Feb. 15.

Sweet was convicted in 2005 of possessing child pornography and corrupting minors. He was charged in 2008 for violating Megan’s Law, legislation mandating a registered sex offender make certain information available to the public.

Sweet also was previously convicted of three DUIs, once in 2002 and twice in 2018, and possession of marijuana in 2005, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

On Jan. 28, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest in relation to the DUI and possession charges he accrued at the end of 2018.
