Grant submittal on playground sent back for further review

City Council voted to return the issue of submitting a state grant of $250,000 for an accessible playground at Memorial Park back to the finance committee for further review.

The grant is with the Commonwealth Financing Authority as part of the Greenways, Trailways and Recreation Program.

The estimated cost of the playground replacement is more than $300,000. The grant requires a 15 percent match, or $37,500.

The grant along with community development funds and donations may pay for the playground, a design of which has been reviewed by various

council committees.

The playground is closed because of potentially hazardous equipment and flooring that is not accessible.

Jason Fitzgerald, president of Penn Strategies Inc., the city economic development consulting firm, said he will assist in the grant submittal.

In addition, Council:

• Authorized a backhoe purchase for streets and parks department

• A truck for command purposes for fire department

• A lot addition at an apartment house at Railway and E. Third St. for Barry Eck and Suscon.
