City schools ready for new year

Williamsport area school staff are busy readying the buildings and grounds for the coming school year by cleaning classrooms and hiring new staff, said officials. Work is continuing on Millionaire Road, leading to the high school.

The focus is on the schools getting back to 100 percent staff, Timothy S. Bowers, superintendent, told the school board Tuesday.

“That’s not just on the professional side, but on the support side as well,” said Bowers. “That’s been a lot of work, to get ahead of that.”

Construction on Millionaire Road is on schedule. Work started at the beginning of the summer, said Dale Crans, director of maintenance and facilities.

“There’s three different crews from HRI Inc. working up there and they’re working their butts off,” said Crans, who estimates completion by Friday.

Crews are working six days per week and about 12 to 14 hours a day, he said.

“As long as the weather holds out, they’re doing really good,” he said.

Crans is also overseeing classroom cleaning, ensuring they are ready by Aug. 1.

Bowers said it was the first time in the school’s history that the administration asked faculty to completely move out of the rooms to make sure they were properly cleaned.
