Council approves city ethics commission

City Council voted to finalize an ordinance Thursday that creates an ethics commission.

The commission would consist of five city residents, two picked by the mayor and three by council, on staggered three-year terms.

Councilman Joel Henderson led the drive to bring the ordinance to this point.

Henderson said the selected members of the commission would not be any city employees or elected or appointed city officials, to ensure transparency.

The council and mayor have 60 days to make appointments.

Council also reviewed the first reading of the six-year capital projects budget.

These include actions items, some that are able to be done in the next two years, and projects envisioned for the outlying years, most of which consist of a wish list but nonetheless are included in the capital budget, said William E. Nichols Jr., city finance director.
