Mary Elizabeth Flock

Mary Elizabeth Flock, 96, passed away on Jan. 22, 2013, at Foxdale Village, State College, Pa., where she had lived since 1991. She was born in Williamsport, Pa., on March 23, 1916, and was the daughter of the late G. E. Otto Flock and Belle Herdic Ferguson. She was a 1934 graduate of Williamsport High School. She also graduated from Dickinson Junior College before entering Penn State University where she graduated in 1939 with a teaching degree in biological sciences.

Upon graduation from college she was employed as a teacher at Briarcliff Junior College in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. Several years later she joined Rockefeller Institute Hospital as a lab technician. It was soon after this that she joined the American Red Cross and served her country as a recreation director for the American Army Hospital in Nottingham, England, during World War II, the beginning of a professional life of service to others.

After the war, she returned to the United States and was employed for 15 years by the American Friends Service Committee as the coordinator for the diplomatic conference programs overseas. She was then employed by the Baptist Ministries and Missions program as the office manager at their headquarters office in Valley Forge, Pa. She completed her working career as an employee of the Catholic Social Services in Philadelphia, Pa. Soon after her retirement, she moved to Foxdale Village in State College where she was active in many aspects of the retirement community. She always remarked that it was the best decision of her life, as she quickly developed many friends and admired the staff for their unparalleled caregiving.

She was an avid gardener and had a lifelong love for fly fishing. At 91 years old, she was still landing trout with the same finesse she had mastered for decades. Her positive and caring personality and her giving nature was a bright spot for everyone she encountered. She will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Flock Fox and a brother, Charles F. Flock. She is survived by four nephews and two nieces, Drewry R. Fox, Haverford, Michael O. Fox, York, Carolyn F. Scarlett, Catonsville, Md., Stephen C. Flock, Williamsport, Michael F. Flock, Middleburg and Nancy F. Roupp, Montoursville, as well as many great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Foxdale Village on March 16, 2013, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Foxdale Village Givers of Care Fund, 500 E. Marylyn Ave., State College, PA 16801.
