William C. Fredo
William C. Fredo, 91, of Williamsport, died Monday, Feb. 4, at the Williamsport Home after a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was the son of Frederick and Kathryn Petoski Fredo. He was a life long member of Mater Dolorosa Church, known today as St. Joseph the Worker.
William is survived by his wife, the former Theresa R. Maggi, with whom he would have celebrated 66 years of marriage on Feb. 8. Also surviving are sons, William J. and Michael A. (Kim).
William was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Darren, William, Brian, Brent, Jennifer, Evan, Jordan, Kaityln; six great-grandchildren, Dominick, Mia, Dante, Anthony, Jonah and Julianne. William was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry (Fredo) Heaps; a sister, Elenor (Fredo) Mahonski; and a brother, Albert Fredo.
William served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945 during World War II.
Billy, as he was called, was known for being one of the areas friendliest and finest golfers for over four decades, winning tournaments in the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s.
Billy won the Club Championship in 1946 and 1947 at the Williamsport Municipal Golf Course. Then in 1948, he was appointed the golf professional at the Municipal Course.
William also worked for the Department of Transportation for many years and retired from there.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 702 W. Fourth St., on Friday morning at 10 a.m. The burial will be at the convenience of the family and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gatehouse at Divine Providence Hospital, C/O Susquehanna Health Foundation, 1001 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701 or to St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 711 W. Edwin St., Williamsport, PA 17701. Crouse Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
