John ‘Gigi’ Farro

John “Gigi” Farro, 96, formerly of New Philadelphia, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Rose View Centre, Williamsport.

Born in Pottsville, July 30, 1916, he was a son of the late Geralamo and Providence Grieco Faraone. John was a graduate of Pottsville High School and later worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a heavy equipment operator attached to the 397th Bomb Group with the 482nd Service Squad in France and Germany. John worked in the local coal industry before being employed as a boilermaker for Aetna Steel for 23 years, retiring from Three Mile Island as a boilermaker. He was an avid sports enthusiast and gambler who was inducted into the Pa. Sports Hall of Fame. A Senior Citizens Olympics competitor, he achieved Bronze, Silver and Gold metals.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen T. Hoptak Farro, in 2006; five brothers, Sam, Frank, Mena, Joe and Larry; and three sisters, Frances, Theresa and Mary. John is survived by two sons, John M. Farro and his wife, Rita, Princeton, Iowa, and Jerry R. Farro and his wife, Linda, Cressona; a daughter, Maureen, wife of Dr. Roger Barnard, Williamsport; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Matt, Joel, Jerry, Elliott and Ross Farro, Marci Nilsen, Todd Folk and Marissa Folk; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thomas J. Bartashus Funeral Home, New Philadelphia, with the Rev. Ronald J. Minner officiating. Relatives and friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hillside, Pottsville.
