John O. Buttorff

John O. Buttorff, 79, of Jersey Shore, passed away unexpectedly Monday night, March 4, 2013, in the emergency room of Jersey Shore Hospital.

He was born Dec. 27, 1933, in Jersey Shore, a son of Warren A. and Sarah E. Snyder Buttorff. He was married to the former Evelyn Ann Baier who passed away Aug. 22, 2008.

He, along with his wife, operated Buttorff’s Hardware in Jersey Shore for over 60 years. He was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Jersey Shore, a life member of the Jersey Shore B.P.O.Elks Lodge No. 1057 and the Wheel Inn. He was a Sgt. First Class U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He originated the Jersey Shore Junior Football League and he was a constant supporter of Jersey Shore community activities, youth and adult softball, baseball and football leagues.

His survivors include his four sons, John O. Jr. and Kathy of Nippenose Valley, Keith O. and Sherry of Nippenose Valley, Richard W. and Becky of Jersey Shore and Kenneth B. and Debra of Nippenose Valley; nine grandchildren, Matthew W. Buttorff (Angela), Sarah E. Buttorff, Kyle L. Buttorff, Breanne V. Buttorff, Sumer A. Beatty (Justin), Misti M. Herr (Matthew), Tyson R. Buttorff, Kayla J. Buttorff and Kory B. Buttorff; along with eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Friggle of Philadelphia. He was predeceased by a sister, Edith Poet and brothers, Chester, Warren “Barney”, William and Robert.

John’s Life Celebration will begin with a visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, “A Life Celebration Home,” 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 120 Kendall Ave., Jersey Shore, PA 17740, with his Priest Father Bert Kozen Celebrant. Interment will follow in Jersey Shore Cemetery. His family will provide the flowers and suggest contributions be made to St. Luke’s Catholic Church. To leave your fondest memories of John, visit
