Judith A. Stumpf

Judith A. “Judy” Stumpf died on Monday, March 25, 2013. She was 63 years old and had been battling ovarian cancer for almost four years.

Judy was the daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy Stumpf. She is survived by her husband, John M. Glace of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; her brother, John Stumpf of Kansas City, Mo.; and her sister, Patricia (Trish) Klinger of Camp Hill, Pa. She was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Stumpf Rignani of Trout Run and Harrisburg, Pa. Judy is survived by seven nieces and nephews, Keely Rose, Dylan Richard, and Irene Grace Stumpf of Kansas City, Mica Stumpf of Berkeley, Calif., Nathan Richard Rignani of Harrisburg, and Andrew Steven and Joseph John Paul Klinger of Camp Hill.

Judy was an activist all her adult life. In the 1960s, she worked to end the war in Southeast Asia. In the 1970s, she fought to shut down Three Mile Island. In the 1980s, she was the President of ENDALL, a neighborhood organization formed to save the Engletown neighborhood in Midtown Harrisburg. She loved old houses and was proud to have designed and overseen the renovation of 14 residences: two for herself and 12 on spec. She was honored with a listing in Who’s Who in America.

In her retirement, Judy worked to stop the scourge of fracking in Pennsylvania.

Judy graduated from Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and went on to attend so many colleges and universities that her friends dubbed her “Our Lady of Perpetual Education.”

Judy worked at the PA Department of Environmental Protection for 34 years. She retired in 2007 and moved to a log home in the woods near Trout Run, Pa. She said that retiring young was the smartest thing she ever did. She was happy working in her garden, having friends and neighbors come by for campfires, tending her goats and playing with her dogs. She is survived by her two much-loved terriers, Henry and Jill.

Arrangements for a memorial celebration in mid-June 2013 are being handled by Trish Klinger.
