Lawrence Hartford, 85, lifelong Shunk, Pa., resident, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Lawrence Edward was born on Aug. 3, 1927, in Shunk, one of 10 children of the late James S. and Lila (Leonard) Hartford. Lawrence was a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Mendora. On Feb. 6, 1950, he married the former Neva Norton in Towanda.
Lawrence was a “jack of all trades” type of man who was hard working and dedicated to any task at hand. His lifelong inquisitive nature led him to studies of many topics and disciplines. Lawrence started out his working career in the farming business that led him into logging work. He later was employed as a foreman for Penn Dot for several years. In the 1970s, Lawrence worked for IA Construction Corp. in Muncy until retiring in 1995. In addition to working in construction fields, he paved roads throughout Pennsylvania and New York states. Lawrence also served as a Constable and a Forest Fire Warden in Sullivan County. He built his own home, enjoyed woodworking and making furniture. He was an outdoor enthusiast who loved to hunt, fish and camp. He and Neva also enjoyed traveling.
Lawrence was a member of Shunk United Methodist Church, Endless Winds Volunteer Fire Co., Local 158 Laborer Union, Canton’s V.F.W. Post 714 and Moose Lodge 429 and Mildred’s American Legion Post 452.
Surviving are his wife, Neva; two children, Rocky (Peg) Hartford of Shunk and Cheryl (Marlin) Norton of Olean, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; a brother and his wife, Harland and Connie Hartford of Canton; a daughter-in-law, Rosa Hartford of Shunk; six sisters-in-law, Brenda Higley, Mary Hartford and Sandy Hartford, all of Canton, Dolores Hartford of Troy, Pat Hartford of Alba and Janice Hartford of Elmira; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.
He was predeceased by three sons, Marty Gene, Larry and Kent Sr. “Bucky” Hartford; a grandson, Jeremiah Hartford; great-grandson, Mason Millard; and siblings, Marjorie Hickok, Robert, Dean, Glen, Dale, James, Reed and Earl Hartford and Lowell Alan “Punk” Williams.
Calling hours are noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr., in Canton. The funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Thomas Blackall officiating.
Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery, Shunk, Pa. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may consider a memorial in Lawrence’s name to the American Heart Assoc., 1704 Warren Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701.
