On Saturday, March 9, 2013, Marie (Wright) May, formerly of LeRoy, passed away quietly at Bradford County Manor. She was 90 years of age. Born Feb. 8, 1923, in Canton Township, she was the daughter of Meylert and Marion (Wilcox) Wright. Marie was the consummate farmer’s daughter who enjoyed engaging in the daily chores and day-by-day operations of life on the farm. On July 12, 1941, one month after graduating high school, she married her high school sweetheart, Eugene May. Her passion for farming made her the ideal helpmate for her husband and his dairy farm. They shared 62 years until Gene’s passing in 2003. Marie and Gene were blessed with generous and giving hearts, especially where children were concerned. They raised two sons and two daughters of their own and opened their home and hearts to innumerable foster children. Marie was also well known for her sewing and embroidering skills. She was a woman with a deep, abiding faith in the Lord, and was a longtime member of the LeRoy Independent Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and helping to lead others to the path of righteousness. She was an uncomplicated woman without pretense who enjoyed the simple pleasure of the company of her family.
Marie is survived by her sons, Bradley (Sharon) May of Canton, Brent (Pat) May of Granville Summit, Walter, who was raised as a son, (Connie) Beers of Columbia Cross Roads; daughters, Barbara (Dale) Machmer and Beverly Griffin, all of Canton; brother, Mark “Tyke” (Annalee) Wright of Waverly, N.Y.; sisters, Phyllis Ward of Leona and Merylene (Harold) DeWalt of Roseville; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Phillip and Wayne Wright; sisters, Jenny Bellows, Shirley Wolf and Marjorie Wright; an infant grandson; and an infant granddaughter, Ladona; and son-in-law, Gary Griffin.
