Richard W. O’Brien

Richard W. O’Brien, 84, formerly of Williamsport, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, in Sevierville, Tenn.

He was born Jan. 24, 1929, in Williamsport, and was the son of Fred O’Brien and Catherine (Kolb) O’Brien. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann O’Brien, on Sept. 9, 2011, and a brother, Paul O’Brien.

Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Richard followed in his father’s footsteps and began his career with Bell Telephone in Williamsport as a lineman. He later transferred to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and retired as a supervisor for South Central Bell in Tennessee.

Surviving in Williamsport is a sister-in-law, Carolyn Wither, and two nieces, Diane Sprout and Rebecca Wither. Also surviving are two great-nephews, Mark Henry (Gretchen) and Daniel Henry (Michelle), both of Minneapolis, and a great-niece, Melissa Carter (Scott), of Harrisburg.

A graveside service will be held for Richard and Shirley at Wildwood Cemetery on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 1 p.m.
