Helen Louise White

Helen Louise White, 85, of Guys Mills, Pa., and formerly of Williamsport, died at her daughter’s residence on June 30, 2013.

Helen was born on Jan. 21, 1928, in Williamsport, the daughter of the late Woodruff and Marjorie (Porter) Williams.

She was a 1945 graduate of Williamsport High School.

She retired from the Shop-Vac Sweeper Company in Williamsport. She had also been employed at the Pennsylvania Wire Rope and at Brodarts.

She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, in Williamsport. She was an avid bowler, and is in the Pennsylvania Bowler Hall of Fame. She was on the first all black female sanctioned bowling team in Pennsylvania. She holds the lane record at the YMCA in Williamsport for highest female single game, of 287. Helen is a member of the Edgar A. Still Lodge No. 207 IBPOE of the world and the Nancy Wiley Wilson Temple No. 1036. She also liked to fish.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Jay White, of Guys Mills; one sister, Rosa Jane Hughes of Binghamton, N.Y.; one brother, Benson R. Williams Sr. of Williamsport; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins who loved her dearly.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Woodruff Williams, and Albert Williams Sr. who both resided in Williamsport, and Robert Williams who had resided in Buffalo, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held on Aug. 10, 2013, at a place and time to be decided later. Memorial contributions can be made to the Shiloh Baptist Church, Williamsport, or to the Salvation Army, Williamsport.
