Joan R. Thompson

Joan R. Thompson, 85, loving wife of Richard “Dick” Thompson passed away peacefully at her home in Jersey Shore, Pa., Thursday morning July 4, 2013.

She was born June 10, 1928, in Lock Haven, Pa., to the late great football hall of famer George “Tic” Rathgeber and Ethel Jerles Rathgeber. She graduated from Lock Haven High School and attended Lock Haven University.

To have known Joan was to have known grace and generosity. She was a very friendly, loving and caring women to all those fortunate enough to have crossed her path and to those in need. She took great pleasure in giving her time and energy to others bringing much joy into the lives of all who knew her. She had an uncanny ability to make all those around her feel special.

She served as officer on the Jersey Shore Historical Society, Amaranths, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She also served on the Republican Committee, volunteered with the American Red Cross doing blood drives and at the Jersey Shore Hospital gift shop.

She was a very devoted Christian with strong Christian values, belonging to the First United Methodist Church and giving to many Christian organizations.

She was employed at Thompson’s Meats in Jersey Shore, Pa., in the packaging Dept. in 1977, soon after becoming the receptionist until 2010, when she retired at age 82.

She was a dedicated mother of three children, Richard (Holly) Thompson of Mill Hall, Kathryn Thompson of Barbours, and Kurt (Karen) Thompson of Salladasburg. Joan also graciously, along with her husband, raised two of her granddaughters: Kami (Jason) Confair of Lancaster, and Lauren (Jeremy) Reed of Jersey Shore. Also surviving are grandchildren, Ethan, Clark, Colton, Breanna, Richard, Ryan and great-grandchildren, Hanah, Hunter, Will, Teddy and Hayden.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Christian Clair; two brothers, Tic and Dale Rathgeber and a sister, Vicky Walker.

Joan loved many things in life including her family, picnics, shopping, flowers, and so much more. To know her was to love her. A viewing will be held Friday July, 12, 2013, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main, St., Jersey Shore, Pa. A funeral service will be held Saturday July 13, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home with a private burial at the discretion of the family.
