Donald Gene Holtzman

Donald G. Holtzman, 83, of 714 Childs Ave., South Williamsport, Pa., passed away on July 30, 2013, surrounded by his family at the Gatehouse Hospice, Williamsport.

Donald was born at Williamsport on July 23, 1930. He was the son of the late Ralph R. and Helen V. (Miller) Holtzman.

Donald was a member of and attended Messiah Lutheran Church.

Donald was a dedicated and devoted father and grandfather. He enjoyed anything and everything that included his family. In his earlier years, Don had many interests including boating, hunting, fishing, and camping.

Don was a salesman to the end. He was committed and loyal to his work. He enjoyed working and loved to be around people. In his later years, Don rarely took vacations as he enjoyed working in the corrugated box business which he had done for 61 years.

Don was an animal lover and enjoyed spending time with his buddy “Tibby.”

Donald graduated from the South Williamsport High School, class of 1948, and was a graduate from Lycoming College in the class of 1952. He was the general manager of Stone Container’s Williamsport plant until 1985, when he joined his sons in the family business they created together and called the Packaging Service Group, located in Jersey Shore and Mountaintop.

Don was very involved in the community and donated endless amounts of his time. He served as chairman of the board of the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in getting the Hiawatha Paddle Wheeler on the Susquehanna River and holds the rank of “Admiral.” He was also the past president and member of the board of trustees of the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. He was the past chairman of the Lycoming County United Way annual fund drive and was a board of directors member of the Williamsport Water and Sanitary Authority, AAA North Penn, AAA North Central Motor Club, Bank of Central PA and Commonwealth Bank, and the Lycoming County Industrial Properties Corporation. He was also a past member of the board of directors of Little League International, the Route 15 Coalition, and he was instrumental in obtaining the funding for the new Hepburn Street dam. Don was also past chairman of the Clean Streams committee of the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmans clubs, the past director of the Susquehanna River Association, past chairman of the Lycoming soil and water conservations districts water resource committee. His work led to the development of Rose Valley lake. Don formed the Greater Williamsport partnership, and was the past chairman of the board of the Lycoming County Tourist and Convention Bureau.

Donald is survived by his four sons, James A. Holtzman, David L. (Robin) Holtzman, Patrick Holtzman, Christopher Holtzman, all of Williamsport, and Patrick Holtzman, of Wilkes-Barre. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Lexi Ann Holtzman, Alexandra Warren, and Olivia Fortin; and two grandsons, Zachary Fortin, and Gabriel Fortin; as well as three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his second wife Judy Irion.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Marie Beattie, in 1969 and his late parents.

Friends will be received Monday, Aug. 5, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Charles M. Noll Funeral Home, South Williamsport, PA.

Funeral services for Donald G. Holtzman will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 324 South Howard Street, South Williamsport, at 10 am, Aug. 6, 2013, with Rev. Susan Lynch officiating.

Interment will follow in the Resurrection Cemetery, Montoursville.
