Sara B. Askins

Sara B. Askins, loving mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, was carried by angels on Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, to be with her Lord in Heaven. She passed away peacefully at ManorCare, Sunbury, surrounded by her family.

Sara was born July 21, 1935, to Wilcie and Annabelle Price. Upon her graduation from Lock Haven High School in 1953, she met her husband, Jesse L. Askins Sr. They were united in marriage on Nov. 6, 1954. Together they had six children: Jesse L. Jr, of Mill Hall, Suzanne Sara, who preceded her in death, Susan Marie Woomer, of Connecticut, Wayne Alan, (Denise) of Sunbury, Gregory Scott, of Lock Haven, and Christopher Halbert, of Beech Creek.

She was also blessed with seven grandchildren: Kristina, Samantha, and PFC James Sanders, all of Sunbury, Audryna and Jaycob Askins, both of Sunbury, Suzanne Woomer, of Connecticut and Morgan Askins, of Beech Creek.

Sara loved children and devoted her life to working with and helping them. She was a nurses’ aide in the maternity ward at Lock Haven Hospital in her younger years. Eventually she opened up her house to operate a day care center, touching many hearts and lives through her commitment and love.

In 1991 she retired and became a homemaker to care for her husband. She was actively involved with North Central Sight Services in Williamsport. She always looked forward to their meetings, outings, and all of the friends that brought joy and laughter to her life.

She loved listening to her “talking books” and traveling. From trekking through the back woods in Alaska to seeing the Grand Canyon, to taking trips to Florida and Tennessee with her brother Dale as her “chauffer,” she enjoyed life to the fullest and always tried to find a reason to smile and laugh.

In addition to her children, she leaves behind two sisters, Marie Rippey and Rose (Donald) Brubaker and two brothers, Dale, a U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant retired, (Kathy) Price, of Arkansas and Harry (Betsy) Price of California. She also has many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Sara was preceded in death by a brother, Lee A. Price; her husband, Jesse L. Askins Sr.; a daughter, Suzanne Sara; and her parents, Wilcie and Annabelle Price.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at 7 p.m. at the Donald G. Walker Funeral Home, Inc., 231 High St., Flemington, with Pastor Darrin Hunt, of the First Baptist Church in Sunbury officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park.
