Sarah S. Markman

Sarah S. Markman, 95, died at the Hebrew Home for the Aged, Bronx, N.Y., Nov. 1, 2013. A native of Williamsport, Sarah was the daughter of Harry Steinberg and Sarah Steinberg (Griffel). Sarah was named for her mother (a victim of the 1918 flu pandemic) who died in Williamsport Hospital shortly after giving birth to Sarah.

Sarah’s widowed father married her aunt, May Steinberg (Griffel), who adopted Sarah. Sarah was a member of Temple Beth Ha Shalom, a congregation of which her parents were early members.

Sarah graduated from Dickinson Seminary (now Lycoming College) and she attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. In 1939, Sarah married Frank Markman of Brooklyn, N.Y. They raised two children, Anthony and Joanne, in Williamsport. The marriage ended in divorce. Sarah moved to New York City where she worked for many years in advertising for The Villager, newspaper. Sarah worked as a volunteer at several hospitals, and supported NAMI (National Alliance of Mental Illness).

Sarah was preceded in death by her daughter, Joanne Markman O’Connell; mother, Sarah Steinberg; father, Harry Steinberg; adoptive mother, Miriam (May) Steinberg; aunts, Nettie Lieberman and Jenny Griffel; cousin, Fanny Freundlich; and Fanny’s son, Jackson Freundlich, who was raised in Williamsport. Sarah is survived by her son, Anthony Markman, of New York City; his wife, Shoshana (Nagar); their children, Meytal, of San Francisco, Yochanan, Yael, and Michael, all of New York City; and a grandson, Kevin O’Connell, of San Francisco.

Interment will be at Wildwood Cemetery. Contributions can be made to organizations supporting mental health or cancer research.
