Vernon James Howey

Vernon James Howey, 93, of Cogan Station, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013.

He was born to the late Vernon W. and Florence C. (Osburn) Howey in DuBois, on Aug. 17, 1920. Vernon was married to the late Margaret C. (Noble) on Nov. 26, 1946, at the Sacred Heart Church in Genesee. Married for fifty years, they lived and raised their family in DuBois. After Margie’s passing, Vernon relocated to Cogan Station in 2002 to be close to his family.

Vernon served in the U.S. Navy, in the Pacific, as an Aviation Machinist during World War II from July 1942 until Dec. 1945. He was the owner/operator of the Main Street Sunoco in DuBois, and a salesman for Osburn Buick.

Vernon was a member of The Balls Mills United Methodist Church in Cogan Station and The First United Methodist Church in DuBois, where he served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 17 in DuBois.

Vernon was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Howey of DuBois. He is survived by his brother, Alvin Howey, of Vestal, N.Y.; three sons, Nicholas, Jon and Keven, and their supportive families; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather to twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

At Vernon’s request, there will be no public visitation. A graveside service for the family will be held on Thursday Nov. 7, officiated by his nephew, Rev. Jeffrey Noble. Vernon will be buried next to his bride in St. Catherine’s cemetery in DuBois.
