Freda D. Phelps

During the early morning hours of Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, Freda Dorothy (Schmouder) Phelps of Buttonwood went home to be with the Lord following a lifetime of faithful devotion and service to Him. She was 90 years of age, and had been living at Manor Care North in Williamsport.

Born in Buttonwood on Sept. 14, 1923, she was the daughter of Maynard and Helen (Knipe) Schmouder. Freda was married to Harlan Phelps who preceded her in death earlier this year. Together they had raised two sons and a daughter.

But Freda’s influence reached far beyond her home and family. She was a giver by nature who constantly reached out to help others, especially young people, many of whom referred to her as “Mom.” Even in her illness Freda personified the Scriptural lesson of letting one’s light shine forth.

She is survived by her son, Charles Phelps, of Florida; daughter, Sharon (Edgar) Messner of Roaring Branch; and sisters, Orvilla Thomas of Williamsport, and Lilly (Lloyd) Schmelzle of Niagra Falls, NY.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Jesse Phelps, and sisters Clara Edler and Mary Galbraith.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Steam Valley Community Bible Church. Service will be at 11 a.m. with Pastor Tom MacAvoy officiating. Interment will follow in Steam Valley Cemetery. (Morse & Kleese)
