Jane E. Lukens
Jane E. Lukens (nee Swartz), 85, most recently a resident of The Meadows in Montoursville, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at Sycamore Manor Health Center, also in Montoursville. She was born Oct. 14, 1928, in State College, the daughter of George T. Swartz and Ethel G. Swartz (nee Hartswick).
She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Monroe K. “Mike” Lukens; two brothers, A. Newton Swartz (Elaine), of Mechanicsburg, and John R. Swartz (Alberta), of Montoursville; and two of her three children, Catherine J. Haas, of Montoursville, and Timothy C. Haas, of Williamsport.
She is survived by two brothers, Robert L. Swartz (Aletha, deceased), of Williamsport, and Philip H. Swartz (Joan), of Montoursville; a son, Thomas A. Reed (Debra), of College Park, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Darlyn Haas, of Williamsport; and two grandchildren, Katharine Boyd Reed and Justin Boyd Reed, both of Greenbelt, Md.
A longtime Montoursville businesswoman, Jane was a beauty salon owner-operator for six decades.
She was gifted in all manner of needlework, especially knitting and crocheting. As a child, her granddaughter, Kate, was always resplendent in the handmade sweaters, scarves, and mittens, created by her beloved “Grandma Jane.”
An avid reader of mysteries and romance fiction, Jane was never without a book. She loved “Wheel of Fortune,” and woe unto anyone who phoned her between 7 and 7:30 p.m. on weekday evenings when the program aired.
She spent many hours creating and tending her flower gardens, and her tulips, marigolds, and clematis, brought joy to all. She loved to dance, loved to laugh, taught both her sons to play baseball, and only rarely cheated at gin rummy.
A woman of exceedingly good humor and kindness, she will be missed by family and friends alike.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.
