Ruth S. Foust
Ruth S. Foust, 93, of Canton, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at the Twin Oaks Personal Care Home in Granville Summit while surrounded by her family. She was born June 19, 1920, to Leroy and Dora (Hulslander) Stevens in Addison, N.Y. In her teen years her family moved to Troy, Pa., where she helped them in the Market Basket Grocery store that they owned there. Ruth graduated from Troy High School, class of 1938. After her marriage they moved to Falls Church, Va., where she worked in Washington, D.C. for the U.S. Navy Department, Bureau of Ships, during World War II.
In 1945, they moved back to Canton to the house where she continued to live until failing health caused her to move to Twin Oaks Personal Care Home in 2010. Ruth was employed by Cummings Lumber Company for 10 years, and for Gleckner’s, and Canton Independent Sentinel. She also enjoyed taxiing people to various appointments and outings.
Ruth was a member of the former Canton Methodist Church, continuing her membership in the Ward United Methodist Church. As long as she was able, she was active in their Friendly Missionary Society and other church ministries.
She was a great homemaker and excelled in cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She loved attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s school programs and sporting events. Ruth also loved flowers and feeding and watching her birds.
She is survived by her daughters, Dana Kepler of Gillette, Wyo., and Sherry (Larry) Jennings of Canton; a son, Michael (Jan) Shoemaker, of Muncy; ten grandchildren, Debbe (Vern) Zellers, of Jersey Shore, Shelley Glass, of Gillette, Wyo., Kevin (Bonnie) Perry, of Rock Springs, Wyo., Brenda (Tim) Dennis, of Gillette, Wyo., Mark (Janet) Shoemaker, of Williamsport, Brett Shoemaker, of Mountain Top, Larry Jr. (Annette) Jennings, of Warren Center, Randy Jennings (Lourie), of Granville Summit, Scott (Nicole) Jennings, of Canton, and Jim (Michelle) Jennings, of Canton. She is also survived by 25 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren. Two more great-great-grandchildren are expected in January!
Ruth is also survived by a niece, Melba Campbell, of Coryland and a special “like a son” friend, Rick (Sandra) Segur, of Canton.
She was predeceased by her husband Raymond (Bud) Foust in 1976 and is survived by his children, Dennis (Debbe) Foust and Cheryl (Bob) Merrill and their families.
Besides Ruth’s parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son, William “Billy” Leroy Shoemaker (1949 from Polio); a sister, Ora Campbell (1994); great-grandson, Samuel Zellers (1978); great-great-granddaughter, Lilly Mae Harris (2012); and nephew Donald Campbell (2003).
Services will be held at the Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive in Canton on Monday, Dec. 16 at noon. The family will receive friends 11 a.m. and continue until start of service. Her grandson, Larry Jennings Jr., and her pastor, Jerry Schmidt, will officiate the service.

The family cannot express their gratitude enough to Marsha and the care givers at Twin Oaks for the wonderful care our loved one has received over the past four years.
