Janet B. Buckle
Janet B. Buckle, 88, of Loyalsock Township, died peacefully at the Hillside on March 12, 2014.
She was born in New Jersey, the daughter of Sir Alexander and Lady Alice Brackenridge, who emigrated from Scotland to the United States during the early 1900s.
During World War II Janet served in the British Women’s Royal Naval Service. She liked to say the HMS on her beret stood for How Mighty Sweet, as well as Her Majesty’s Service.
She was a graduate of the University of Vermont, Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School, and Syracuse University, where she earned her master’s degree.
Janet was a member of the Dean of Women’s staff at Syracuse and Southern Illinois Universities. After moving to Williamsport in 1957, and time at home raising her children, she began her career as a first grade teacher in Loyalsock Township elementary schools, where she taught for twenty-four years.
Janet loved dogs, and enjoyed reading and gardening. Following her retirement she volunteered as a literacy tutor at the James V. Brown library.
She is predeceased by her husband, Jack C. Buckle, Dean of Students Emeritus, Lycoming College.
Janet is survived by her two sons, Bruce (Betty), of Williamsport and Peter (Daryl), of Elimsport; four grandchildren, Gretchen, Melissa, Nicholas and Isaac; and one great-grandson, Jackson. She is also survived by her sister, Marion Thompson, of Fox Chapel. Her brother, A. Bruce Brackenridge, of Bronxville, N.Y., predeceased her.
The body has been donated to the Humanity Gifts Registry. The family will celebrate her life privately, but would like to publicly thank all of her caregivers from Susquehanna Health Home Care and Hospice and at the Hillside for their kindnesses during her time of need.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Janet’s name to the Jack C. and Janet B. Buckle Endowed Fund, which provides annual scholarships to two Lycoming students for their extraordinary leadership and service, c/o Lycoming College, 700 College Place, Williamsport, PA 17701 or the SPCA, 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701.
Arrangements are being handled by the James C. Maneval Funeral Home, Ltd., “A Life Celebration Home,” 500 W. Fourth St., Williamsport.
