John W. Allen
John W. Allen, 84, of Morning Sun, died Monday evening, March 10, 2014, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Mr. Allen was born Sept 27, 1929, in Burlington, the only child of Orville W. and M. Marguerite Diehl Allen.
His childhood days were spent on the family farm in Louisa County. The initial years of his education were in a one-room rural schoolhouse near the family farm. He later attended High School in Wapello where he graduated with the Class of 1947. He then attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1951 with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.
Immediately following graduation he began what was to become a 25 year career with Sylvania Electric Products, which later became GTE-Sylvania. His first assignment with GTE-Sylvania was in a Radio Tube Factory in Burlington, where he became Manager of Engineering in 1959. In 1968, he moved to the Williamsport area where he was promoted to Product Line Manager of a custom printed circuit board manufacturing operation. In 1974, Mr. Allen moved to St. Louis, Mo., to become Vice-President of Engineering and Quality Control for the Electrical Equipment Group of GTE-Sylvania.
Mr. Allen retired from GTE-Sylvania in 1976 and moved to the Branson, Mo., area where he purchased and operated the White Wing Resort located on Table Rock Lake. After 8 years of ownership he sold the Resort in 1984 to enter into final retirement. He continued to live in the Branson area until September of 2012, moving to Morning Sun.
During his collegiate years at Iowa State University, he became an avid fan of amateur wrestling at both High School and College level. He traveled many miles and spent many hours, particularly in the retirement years, attending High School and College matches and tournaments. The result was the formation of many very fine and lasting friendships with the wrestlers, their families, and the coaches. Mr. Allen treasured this accumulation of friendships as his true wealth until his death.
He leaves behind him relatives that include a first cousin, Gerrie Wolfe, of Morning Sun; along with a lifetime richly blessed with many fine and lasting friendships that were formed during his school days in Wapello and Iowa State University; from his 25 years of association with GTE-Sylvania; and from his 8 years as owner/operator of the White Wing Resort in Branson; as well as those many close friendships established through his interest in amateur wrestling.
The body was cremated. A memorial service in the form of a ‘Celebration of Life and Friendship’ for the family and friends who are able and would like to attend will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church in Wapello. A lunch will be provided along with prayers by Rev. Pam Kranzler. Private burial will take place at the Wapello Cemetery next to his parents.
In lieu of floral tributes, a contribution may be made to the Lives Under Construction Boy’s Ranch located at No. 296 Boy’s Ranch Road, Lampe, MO, 65681.
