Alma A. Hense

Alma A. Hense, long-time resident of Woolrich, passed away quietly on Monday, March 31, 2014 at Buffalo Valley Nursing Center surrounded by her family.

Alma was the widow of Robert C. Hense, who preceded her in death in April 2009. They had been married for 63 years.

Born in 1923 to Isaac Vannoy and Lucy Maxwell Vannoy in Dekalb, W.Va., Alma graduated from Tanner High School in 1941. She graduated from Mountain State Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Charleston, W.Va. and entered the Army Nurse Corps.

She met her husband, “Bob,” while an army nurse at Ft. Robinson, Ark. When the war ended, they were married, and upon their military discharges, they made their home in Woolrich, living most of their married life there. In July 2008, Mr. and Mrs. Hense moved to Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village in Lewisburg.

Alma spent most of her working life as an emergency room nurse at Lock Haven Hospital, retiring in 1985. After retirement, she remained active with the Red Cross Blood Drives.

Mrs. Hense is survived by three daughters and their husbands, George and Sandra Domeny, of Albuquerque, N.M., Gary and Sharon Ray, of Chesterfield, Va., and William and Mary Lyons, of Muncy. There are four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 4 at the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven, with the Rev. Robert Dunkleberger of Muncy Presbyterian Church officiating. Visitation will preceed the services from 1 to 2 p.m. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park.
