John Opp

John Opp, 90, of Hughesville, died Monday, April 28, 2014, at The Williamsport Home. He was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Muncy, a son of the late Elmer Reed and Pearl Mae Hurst Opp. Sept. 15, 1950, he married Sarah Alice Evans, who survives.

John was a sheet metalworker and overhead crane operator at Sprout Waldron for over 38 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club at Sprout Waldron, American Legion Post 35, Hughesville, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Muncy and the Little Gap Hunting Club for over 67 years. John loved to travel, hunt, spend time at the cabin and was known for his cheesecakes.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, John is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Robert) Brown, of Muncy; a son, Phillip (Karen) Opp, of Montoursville; three grandchildren, Christopher (Dianna) Brown, Jenna (Michael) Sellers and Johaira Opp; six great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Cassidy and Molly Brown, Regan and Kennedy Sellers and Naeveh Opp; and a sister, Vida Opp, of Santa Monica, Calif.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Opp and four sisters, Martha Kenkovich, Ethel Jacobs, Dorothy Jacobs and Betty Opp.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, by Rev. Robert Ingraham. The interment will be in the Muncy Cemetery, with military honors accorded by combined military organizations. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Thursday from 1 p.m. till the time of service. The family will provide the flowers and asked that memorial contributions be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or the Lycoming County SPCA, 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701.
