Dale L. Smith

Dale L. Smith, 78, of Loyalsock Township, died Friday, May 23, 2014, at home. Born in Williamsport on Aug. 2, 1935, he was the son of E. Herbert and Harriet Steinbeck Smith.

Dale was a member of Faxon Kenmar United Methodist Church. A scratch agent, Dale started his own Nationwide Insurance Agency in 1960, which continues today as the Smith Burch Agency. He attended Lycoming College and Ursinus College. A Navy veteran, he served aboard the U.S.S. Torsk submarine, which is now on display in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Maryland. He was a member of the Williamsport Area Submarine Base. While serving in the Navy, he became a Mason. He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge in New London CT. Local affiliations include: the Boy Scouts of America, troop leader for Faxon Kenmar Church; board member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society; member of the Loyalsock Lions Club and Williamsport Kiwanis Club; board member of the Lycoming County Brotherhood USA Board and served as a board member of the YMCA for many years.

He is survived by his wife, the former Peggy Niklaus Smith; his daughters, Debi (Seth) Burch, of Williamsport and Susie (Craig) Frischman, of Pittsburgh; and grandchildren Clarke, Reed and Cole Frischman, of Pittsburgh. He is also survived by his siblings, Edgar Smith, of Trout Run and sisters, Joann Strouble, of Montoursville and Nancy Dorman, of Muncy; stepbrother, Ronald Halderman, of Roaring Branch; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his stepsister, Mabel Maggs.

Dale was a friend to all he met. Always quick with a laugh, he enjoyed helping others. He was An avid outdoorsman and lover of nature. One of his greatest joys was in spending time with his grandchildren, whether taking them to the Historic Museum or following their sporting events, to good times spent at the “firepit,” he loved it all.

Friends may call at the Crouse Funeral Home, 133 E. Third St., Williamsport, 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening or at the church 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. in Faxon Kenmar United Methodist Church, 1225 Clayton Ave., Williamsport. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery Montoursville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Dale’s memory be made to Nevill’s Flowers for a Memorial Tree(s) in Dale’s memory; the Thomas Taber Museum, 858 W. Fourth St., Williamsport; or Susquehanna Health & Hospice, 1001 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport.
