Grace A. Evans
Grace A. Evans, 81, a resident of Montoursville, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at The Gatehouse, Divine Providence Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Cascade Township, Lycoming County, on Aug. 14, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Garrett B. and Bertha E. (Wettlaufer) Smith.
Grace attended Montoursville High School. She retired from Schnadig Furniture Company, in 1994, where she had worked for many years as a sewing machine operator.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and eating out. Prior to dealing with various health issues, she enjoyed baking pies, crocheting, reading and participating in water aerobics for seniors at the YWCA and Lycoming Physical Therapy.
She was a member of Mill Creek United Methodist Church, Warrensville.
Grace is survived by three sons, George A. Evans, of Lake Charles, La.; Theodore W. (Sue) Evans, of Cascade Township, and Douglas A. (Robyn) Evans, of Clarksburg, W.Va. and four daughters, Shirley A. (Robert) Cunningham, of Cogan Station, Carla E. (Rich) Arnold, of Milton, Penelope G. (Luther) Merrill, of Muncy, and Tammy R. (Brian) Evelhair, of Linden. She is also survived by three brothers, Danie I. (Norma) Smith, of Trout Run, Edward W. (Kay) Smith, of Collomsville, and George A. (Anna) Smith, of Trout Run, and one sister, B. Irene Smith, also of Trout Run. In addition, she is survived by 31 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Carl S. Evans in 1987; her loving companion, John W. “Jack” Briner in 2005; and three sons, Edward L. Evans, David A. Evans, and Peter G. Evans. She was also predeceased by three brothers, Harold Henry, G. Charles Smith, and Michael T. Smith, and four sisters, Cora L. Allen, Ethel K. Phillips, Charlotte I. Loudenslager, and Mary E. Rogers.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., with her Pastor, the Rev. Katherine Behrens officiating. Grace will be interred at the Huntersville Trinity Cemetery, Mill Creek Township Lycoming County, immediately following the service. Her grandsons, George A. Evans Jr., Carl J. Evans, Richard A. Rhone, Alan L. Evans, Gary O. Evans, Toby M. Baltzer, Matthew B. Arnold, Nathan A. Merrill, Timothy G. Evans, and Brian A. Evelhair will serve as pall bearers.
