Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Gavula Cowles

Elizabeth “Betty” Gavula Cowles, 86, passed away peacefully on June 24, at The Gatehouse Hospice.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Howard; children Richard (Cheryl), Krista Willett, Russell, Lisa Hooper (Charles), Kimberly Crossen (John); 9 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; her brother, John; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Betty worked at Lycoming College for 24 years in the Career Development Center. She was a long time Alpha Rho Omega adviser. Betty was always happiest when surrounded by family, both natural and gathered. Her home was often also home to students, friends and relatives, giving her a steady supply of untested recipe tasters.

Generous of spirit and time and deeply religious, Betty spent many hours volunteering at Birthright, Adult Literacy, St. Anthony Center, CCD and Cub Scouts. She will be remembered as forever young at heart.

Plays, concerts and museums all thrilled Betty. From walking up mountains, to paddling rivers, traveling to spend time with those she loved, Betty was ready for anything. She will be missed and her memory will live on reflected in the love of others.

The family will receive family and friends at the church from 8:30 to 9:30 Monday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church with her pastor, Rev. John J. Victoria officiating.

Burial, at Wildwood Cemetery, will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully suggests memorial contributions in Betty’s name may be made to St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, 1220 Northway Rd., Williamsport, PA 17701.
