Rocky Hartford

Rocky Hartford, 62, life-long resident of Shunk, passed away at home while surrounded by his beloved family on Thursday June 19, 2014, in the same house and room that he was born.

Rocky Lane Hartford was born on April 17, 1952, at the family home in Fox Township. He was one of five children of Neva (Norton) Hartford and the late Lawrence Hartford. Rocky graduated in 1970 from Sullivan County High School where he participated in the WACC Vo-Tech program, studying aviation mechanics.

On November 18, 1979, he married the former Margaret “Peg” Porter in the East Canton United Methodist Church. Rocky enjoyed his work for the IA Construction Co., out of Muncy for many years advancing to paving supervisor and a grade foreman.

After “retiring” he worked in the pipeline construction field until 2004. He then worked for Pride Enterprises until 2010, leaving to help care for his father.

Rocky will be remembered as a man who enjoyed a good day’s work, always giving 110 percent. He was the ultimate “family man” and their welfare always came first. He lived life to its fullest and loved doing many things. Rocky was an avid outdoorsman, appreciating all of nature’s beauty. He hunted, fished, tended gardens and picked “blueberries from hell”. His deer stands were modern marvels of comfort. Most of all, Rocky was willing to help anyone in need.

He was a member of the Laborer’s Local Union 158 of Harrisburg and Canton’s Moose Lodge No. 429.

In addition to his mother, Neva of Shunk, surviving are his wife of 35 years, Peg; three children, Stacy Hartford, of Shunk, Rod (Amanda) Hartford, of Canton, and Nickie (Scott) Jennings, of LeRoy; six grandchildren, Maleigha and Jillaney Hartford, Siarra (Josh) Gordon, Brianna and Austin Hartford and Emily Jennings; a great-granddaughter, Lily Gordon; a sister, Cheryl (Marlin) Norton, of Olean, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Mable Shedden; brother-in-law and sister-in-law; Rich (Donna) Porter and Shelia Porter, all of Canton; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Butch and Sue Pennabaker, of Honey Brook, Pa., Don and Wanda Boomer of Irasburg, Vt., Joe and Mary Napolsky, of Pringle, Pa.; and his devoted dogs, Billy and Babe.

In addition to his father, Rocky was predeceased by three brothers; Larry, Marty and Kent “Bucky” Hartford; his father-in-law, Art Porter and sister-in-law, Cheryl Porter.

Calling hours are 10 to noon Saturday, June 28, at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Drive, Canton. Rev. Thomas Blackall will officiate the memorial service at noon, Interment will be private.
